Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has been closed for two days after a first-year student of fine arts was killed near Jamia Health Centre at 3pm on Tuesday. The crime was committed even as heavy security arrangements have been made in the varsity, which is a practice venue for the Commonwealth Games.
Shahrukh was reportedly asked to come out of the class by four youths. "He left his class after he got a call on his cell. He went out to meet the callers who took him close to Jamia Health Centre. An altercation ensued after which he was attacked with knives and knuckles,'' said a source.
Jamia vice-chancellor Najeeb Jung said: "What we got to know is that four persons assaulted our student and left the place. Few students later took him to a nearby hospital and then transferred him to Holy Family where he was declared brought dead.''
According to Jamia administration, the university will remain closed on September 29 and 30. Otherwise the university was scheduled to close for the Games from October 1. "In order to avoid further tension we are closing two days in advance,'' said Jung.
The absconding accused are said to be ex-students of Jamia and were recently rusticated on charges of eveteasing. "I am being told that two of the identified youths are among four students who were rusticated a week back,'' said Jung.
Shahrukh's father Saheer Anwar is a yoga teacher with Jamia School and his grandfather was a faculty with the English department. Grief-stricken Anwar said: "I have no idea why this happened. Only the police investigation can throw some light on the issue. But Shahrukh never had any fight with anyone. We got a call from his friend, Farhan, who was also reportedly beaten up. By the time we reached the hospital everything was over.''
Describing Shahrukh as a well-mannered youth, academic council member of Jamia, Syed M Mahmood, said: "Not only we know him as a student, but his father is also our friend. We have never seen him doing anything wrong.''
Meanwhile, the police have registered a case and investigations are on to nab the accused. According to a senior police official of Jamia Nagar Police station, it could be a case of personal enmity.
