Dey was shot from close range: postmortem

The postmortem report of murdered senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey came out on Sunday and indicated that Dey was shot from a close range.

The report also shows that five bullets hit him, of which, four hit him in the left chest and one was lodged under the right shoulder.

While speculation is rife that it was the work of the underworld, the police for now say that it was the work of professionals. The funeral of J Dey will take place on Sunday.

The police have taken the CCTV footage of around the area where Dey was shot, and will survey the footage.

A senior crime reporter and editor of Special Investigations of Mumbai Mid-Day, Jyotirmoy Dey was shot five times on Saturday outside his home, in broad daylight. His killers were reportedly four gunmen on two motorbikes.

He has been covering the underworld for two decades, and has written two books on it as well, named, Zero Dial and Khallas.

Expressing shock over the killing, Maharashtra PWD minister Chhagan Bhujbal said the journalist did not 'target' any gang or mafia in particular.

Bhujbal said, "I knew him for long and was a friend for 15 years. He wrote for many newspapers. I don't know why he was shot dead. Maybe some reporting of his had hurt some mafia. We have a lost an important reporter in the State."

Asked if the killing could be linked to elements from the underworld or the oil mafia, Bhujbal, a former Home Minister, said, "Dey was a very honest person. He used to write on the underworld. He was not targeting anyone in particular, whether any gang or any (oil) mafia."

Dey stayed in Ghatkopar and is survived by wife Shobha.
