The Mumbai Police on Wednesday detained two suspects in the murder of crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey, even as chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said the“main breakthrough” in the case would come soon.
The two, Anwar Sheikh and Mateen alias Iqbal Hatela, who may have been among the shooters, wo rk for Pune-based mafia manager D Raja, who allegedly takes supari (contracts for killings) for Karachi- based gangster Chhota Shakeel, said a police source.
The source said two others allegedly involved in shooting Dey at Powai on June 11 had also been detained. However, officials neither confirmed nor denied this. The police also remained tight-lipped on the motive for the killing. Joint commissioner of police (crime) Himanshu Roy said the suspects were being questioned.“We are verifying their involvement in the crime,” Roy said.
The police source said Raja, originally from Mumbai’s Antop Hill area, had been holed up in the Ambewadi area of Pune for some time now. Last month, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad picked him up for questioning following information that he had an AK-47 rifle. However, he did not have the weapon and was let off, the source added. Mateen has at least 16 cases of robbery registered against him, said the source.
He was allegedly close to Imran Jingada, brother of top Shakeel gang hitman Munna Jingada, who is in a jail in Bangkok in connection with the attack on gangster Chhota Rajan in 2001. Little is known about Sheikh except that he is a resident of Mumbra, the source added. Meanwhile, the CM’s confident claim of a breakthrough in the case came after a weekly cabinet meeting. He told mediapersons,“There is a lot of progress in the case and we will arrest someone.”
