The Google Glass demo will go down in history as one of the most elaborate product launches. Sergey Brin’s video featured two skydivers jump out of a blimp over San Francisco wearing the Google Glass headwear. The video was streamlined directly to the Moscone Center—housing the annual Google I/O—using Google+’s Hangout feature, which allows several parties to access and participate in a live real-time videoconference. Brin said while onstage, “This is one of the things we’ve been experimenting with Glass, the ability to really share. We’ve shown photos but this is something we haven’t tried.”
Sergey Brin gave the play-by-play as a troop of skydivers, bikers, and rope rappelers converged on the Moscone convention center, in a scene that could have been the opening sequence of a "Mission Impossible" movie.
The skydivers made jumping out of an airship look easy. But before they could do it, Google had some challenges to overcome, not the least of which was how to get a good Internet connection at 4,000 feet.
Not only was it the first time skydivers using wing-suits got permission to jump out of a zeppelin airship in the U.S., but the feat posed some odd technical problems that Google engineers solved after a MacGyver moment or two.
For instance, the Glasses weren't designed to be worn by someone falling through the air at 200 miles an hour in bright sunlight. In early testing on the ground, engineers worried that the glare from the sun would interfere with the devices, according to Google. At one point, they applied electrical tape to the lenses to serve as a sort of filter. Eventually, they came up with a better solution -- they applied photochromic film to the lenses.
An even bigger problem to figure out was how to get the live video feed of what the skydivers were seeing through the Glasses and out to the Internet. This is not a simple feat in a city where cell phone reception itself can be spotty on the streets below.
How's this for ingenuity? Early on in the project, the team grabbed a Wok--yes, the kind for sauteing vegetables--and tried to use it as a broadcast dish. They attached a Nexus Galaxy smartphone to it and pointed it up at the sky. That initial idea was rejected in favor of more workable solutions, though Google hasn't shared the details yet.
But forget the technology. The question on many peoples' minds was who did the company have to bribe to get permission to carry out such a potentially dangerous and unprecedented stunt in downtown San Francisco? What started out as a joke at an early planning meeting about six weeks ago, ended up being the talk of the town and the highlight of the Google I/O developer conference this week. There was some red tape involved and costs for equipment and hiring the skydivers and the airship company, but apparently no money paid to officials.
The company got cooperation from NASA Ames, which is in Mountain View, Calif., practically the company's backyard, as well as from the San Francisco Mayor's Office. And, most importantly, it got all the necessary approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration, which set additional stringent requirements to allow the stunt over a populated area. For instance, there were requirements governing experience of jumpers, height for opening chutes, and communications between the ground and the pilot and the air traffic controller. "They had a thorough vetting," said FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.
And what was it like to jump over San Francisco wearing such high-tech goggles? "It was pretty spectacular," Keri Bell, the only female among the skydivers, told the reporters. "It was like having rock star status, being part of such a huge event."
Here is the video of the Google Glass skydiving demo from Google I/O.

A day after "The Amazing Spider-Man" teaser trailer leaked, Sony Pictures has released the official version online. Containing exactly the same footage seen in the bootleg version, it gives a better look at Peter Parker as a little boy and his parents, who left him with Aunt May and Uncle Ben. The preview also shares scenes when teen Peter has a dinner with Gwen Stacy's family and sews what looks like his Spider-Man costume.
While in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy Peter was seen as a nerd, the new movie depicts him more like an outsider. Talking about this reinvention, "Amazing Spider-Man" director Marc Webb has previously explained, "What was important in those early comics was this notion that Peter Parker is an outsider and how we define that in a contemporary context. That, I think, was one of the challenges for us - getting Peter Parker's outsider status to be current."
Playing the titular character is Andrew Garfield with Emma Stone starring opposite him as Peter's love interest Gwen, and Rhys Ifans taking the role of Dr. Curt Conners/The Lizard. The movie is set to arrive in theaters across the nation on July 3, 2012.
"Amazing Spider-Man" will take part at this year's San Diego Comic Con when Sony holds a panel for its upcoming releases on Friday, July 22. In another promotional effort, an official poster for the movie has been displayed at the side of the Hard Rock Hotel, featuring the Spider-Man logo on his costume.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund, has been released from house arrest in the sexual assault case against him.
The French politician appeared briefly in a New York courtroom on Friday after reports that prosecutors had grave doubts about the credibility of Strauss-Kahn's accuser.
The judge stressed that the move does not mean that the "case is over" and prosecutors did not agree to dismiss the sexual assault case against Strauss-Kahn.
Strauss-Kahn was arrested in May, accused of trying to rape a hotel maid, and has been confined to a Manhattan apartment.
The 32-year-old hotel maid accused Strauss-Kahn of chasing her through his luxury suite in New York, trying to pull down her pantyhose and forcing her to perform oral sex.
He denies the allegations, saying the relationship was consensual.
His passport remained surrendered, and he will not yet be allowed to leave the country. However, one of his attorneys, Benjamin Brafman, said Strauss-Kahn would be free to travel within the US.
"It is a great relief, another of Strauss-Kahn's attorneys, William Taylor, said, adding that the case underscores "how easy it is for people to be charged with serious crimes and for there to be a rush to judgement."
"It is so important in this country that people, especially the media, refrain from judgement until the facts are all in," he said.
'Violent assault'
Revelations of major problems with his accuser's credibility were first reported in The New York Times.
Reports say investigators have come to believe that the woman lied about some of her activities in the hours around the alleged attack and about her own background.
Jacky Rowland reports on reactions in Paris
Prosecutors think she also lied about details on her application for asylum in the US, including saying she had been raped in her native Guinea, the newspaper said.
The accuser's attorney did not back down on the seriousness of the charges.
"From Day One she has described a violent sexual assault that Dominique Strauss-Kahn committed against her," attorney Ken Thompson said.
"She has described that sexual assault many times, to prosecutors and to me, and she has never once changed a single thing about that encounter," he said.
Addressing reporters outside the court, he said the woman had walked into the suite to clean after being told no one was inside.
"Then Strauss-Kahn came running out of one of those rooms naked towards her and he grabbed her beasts first and started to attack her. He then grabbed her vagina with so much force that he hurt her ... that he bruised her vagina," Thompson said.
"When Dominique Strauss-Kahn threw the victim to the floor he tore a ligament in her shoulder. She may now need surgery for the damage he caused to her shoulder".
Strauss-Kahn, 62, was arrested in New York on charges of sexual assault. He resigned from the IMF on May 19 and pleaded not guilty on June 6, vehemently denying the allegations. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
Strauss-Kahn's arrest also shook up French politics as he was a leading contender for French presidency from the Socialist Party. His supporters claim that he was being set up. If charges against him are dropped, it could throw the presidential race in France wide open.
French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde was appointed as the new IMF chief on Tuesday.

Intelligence officials on Saturday unveiled five different videos of Bin Laden that were confiscated from the raid by U.S. forces at his Pakistan compound, which left the al Qaeda leader and four others dead.
The tapes show him watching himself on television, and preparing a video message addressed to the US.
At a news briefing in Washington, intelligence officials said Bin Laden had been actively leading al-Qaeda from the compound in Abbottabad.
In total, five videos were seized during Monday's raid.
In the first video, filmed in October or November 2010, Bin Laden is shown wearing a white skullcap and white robes as he speaks to the camera in the style of previous video addresses by the al-Qaeda leader.
There is no audio on the film, but Pentagon officials said it was a message to the United States.
Three other clips appear to be rehearsals for the video message.
It is the first such film to emerge since al-Qaeda released a video address from Bin Laden in 2007, says our correspondent.
See othe video on youtube"Osama Bin Laden watches himself on TV"
http://youtu.be/9lx5QyVPs9Q
Officials say the new videos and other information collected from the site in Abbottabad are considered to be the most significant amount of intelligence ever collected from a senior terrorist.
The video and other intelligence show that the slain al Qaeda leader was very much in control over the network's day-to-day operations, according to Pentagon officials briefing reporters.
The intelligence reveals that bin Laden and al Qaeda had a driving interest in taking on the United States and that the leader was involved in the details of plotting attacks.
There is no audio to accompanying the video, punctuating the chilling imagery and keeping his words from being used as, officials say, militant propaganda.
One video looks like a home movie, a portrait of an old man watching television, but it is an image of a terrorist and suggests how conscious bin Laden was of his image.
Sporting a white-gray beard, bin Laden is seen sitting in front of a small television, flipping through a selection of satellite channels as he intently views video footage of himself.
A hunched Bin Laden is wearing a dark wool cap with a blanket draped around his shoulders, holding a clicker and slightly rocking in his seat in spartan surroundings.
One of the videos is a message to the United States officials believe was recorded in October or November. In that video, bin Laden's beard has been dyed black and he was well-composed as he delivered his message.
The three other videos are practice sessions for videos he was planning to release to the world.
The photos were released amid the Obama adminstration's decision not to release photos of the slain bin Laden and buried the terrorist leader at sea.
A senior intelligence official briefing reporters at the Pentagon said last week's raid by U.S. forces yielded a significant amount of intelligence, and that a special federal taskforce -- including members of the CIA and FBI -- is combing through the material.
The official also said the DNA evidence unquestionably shows that the person shot and killed in the Pakistan compound was bin Laden.
The intelligence officials said they are trying to determine what bin Laden's death means to the future of al Qaeda and are combing through intelligence to get clues on where other top al Qaeda leaders are.
The No. 2 man in al Qaeda is Ayman al-Zawahiri; another top militant is Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S. born militant who is a leader in the group's Yemen branch.

Salient features of Jan Lokpal Bill
Drafted by Justice Santosh Hegde, Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal, this Bill has been refined on the basis of feedback received from public on
website and after series of public consultations. It has also been vetted by
and is supported by Shanti Bhushan, J M Lyngdoh, Kiran Bedi, Anna Hazare etc. It was sent to the PM and all CMs on 1st December.
1. An institution called LOKPAL at the centre and LOKAYUKTA in each state
will be set up
2. Like Supreme Court and Election Commission, they will be completely
independent of the governments. No minister or bureaucrat will be able to
influence their investigations.
3. Cases against corrupt people will not linger on for years anymore:
Investigations in any case will have to be completed in one year. Trial
should be completed in next one year so that the corrupt politician, officer
or judge is sent to jail within two years.
4. The loss that a corrupt person caused to the government will be
recovered at the time of conviction.
5. How will it help a common citizen: If any work of any citizen is not
done in prescribed time in any government office, Lokpal will impose
financial penalty on guilty officers, which will be given as compensation to
the complainant.
6. So, you could approach Lokpal if your ration card or passport or voter
card is not being made or if police is not registering your case or any
other work is not being done in prescribed time. Lokpal will have to get it
done in a month’s time. You could also report any case of corruption to
Lokpal like ration being siphoned off, poor quality roads been constructed
or panchayat funds being siphoned off. Lokpal will have to complete its
investigations in a year, trial will be over in next one year and the
guilty will go to jail within two years.
7. But won’t the government appoint corrupt and weak people as Lokpal
members? That won’t be possible because its members will be selected by
judges, citizens and constitutional authorities and not by politicians,
through a completely transparent and participatory process.
8. What if some officer in Lokpal becomes corrupt? The entire functioning
of Lokpal/ Lokayukta will be completely transparent. Any complaint against
any officer of Lokpal shall be investigated and the officer dismissed within
two months.
9. What will happen to existing anti-corruption agencies? CVC,
departmental vigilance and anti-corruption branch of CBI will be merged into
Lokpal. Lokpal will have complete powers and machinery to independently
investigate and prosecute any officer, judge or politician.![]()
