Baba Ramdev fast fizzles out, ends his nine day old fast

Jun 13, 2011

Baba Ramdev was on Sunday forced to break his nine-day-old fast that triggered a confrontation with the UPA government, after the Centre refused to resume talks with him on the issues of corruption and black money and his flip-flop charter of demands.

Ramdev broke his fast in the presence of spiritual leaders such as Sri Sri Ravishankar and Morari Bapu, without eliciting any assurance from the Centre on his demands.

In the absence of any political intervention, it was left to the spiritual leaders to persuade the 46-year-old Ramdev to call off his hunger strike. Sri Sri Ravishankar, who met him for the third time in as many days at a Dehra Dun hospital, confirmed after the meeting that his efforts had borne fruit.

“ Ramdev has broken his fast by taking juice,” the Art of Living founder said. “He ended the fast in the presence of various religious and spiritual leaders. ’’

Ramdev will be discharged from hospital in two-three days though his condition is stable, said doctors. “I am thankful to everyone who came here and helped Ramdev to break his fast. His health is not such that he can be discharged today, ’’ Vijay Dhasmana, the hospital director , told newspersons.

Congress and BJP welcomed Ramdev's decision to end the fast.
