Akon's birthday bash attracts Mumbai crowd
International R&B superstar Akon arrives in India today ahead of his India tour. His birthday bash, which will be held at Pune, is turning out to be a large draw for Mumbaikars who were finding it difficult to travel to Gurgaon and Delhi.
American singer-songwriter Akon will be landing in Mumbai on Friday (i.e. today) morning for his India tour. He will be arriving with a crew of 22 people complete with 3 personal bodyguards.
The 37-year-old Senegalese-American singer, known for hits like 'Lonely', 'Smack That', 'I Wanna Love You' and that club-thumping anthem 'Sexy Bitch', will be performing at Huda Ground, Gurgaon on April 16 and Gayatri Vihar, Bengaluru on April 17. He will be visiting India with his wife and they have requested for all information regarding sightseeing, restaurants, health club facilities, museums, art galleries, shopping around the city since his wife is quite intrigued with the culture of India. In fact, Akon and his family consider India their favourite vacation spot apart from Brazil.
Akon will only be in the city for a few hours but, according to sources, he does plan to visit the Gateway of India.
His requirements for the entire tour are strict and precise. For example, his contingent has requested for 100 black towels. All meals in dressing rooms will be served in chaffing dishes and covered by clear plastic wrap only. Akon reportedly doesn’t like the concept of take away food and prefers his meals served hot. Being a health freak, Akon would require a juicer and blender for juicing and making smoothies. Strictly no pork, Chinese or fast foods will be served to Akon and his touring staff.
Furthermore, he will be provided king size beds and his room will be located away from elevators, ice machines, high traffic areas, housekeeping room as he prefers a noise-free environment. All housekeeping will be done in the afternoon only. The organisers would have to inform Akon in advance if any kind of refurbishment or decoration is being undertaken at the hotel which affects facilities such as restaurants, bars, or health club. A licensed massage therapist, massage table, massage chair and essential oils will be provided to help him beat stress and feel rejuvenated after performing back-to-back concerts.
Disappointed at missing out? Pune isn't too far away.
Mumbaikars who were disappointed that international R&B superstar Akon would be giving the city a miss in favour of Gurgaon and Bangalore have another shot at watching him perform live. Scores of fans from the city will be travelling to Bangalore (a few to Delhi as well). However, there are some who missed out on booking their tickets for those shows and with the recent reports of Akon celebrating his birthday in nearby Pune on Friday, some are making a mad dash to Maharashtra's cultural capital to catch Akon live.
Several Akon fans in the city who are now making last minute plans to travel there. 24-year-old media student Aditi Verma excitedly shares, "I'm a huge Akon fan but unfortunately I couldn't afford going to Bangalore or Delhi for either of the shows. However, the Pune birthday bash is affordable and travelling there will be convenient too!" Another fan, 27-year-old Neha Kumari, a PR professional, says, "The best thing about going to Pune is that it's easy to travel to and I can stay with family, thereby saving on cost of accomodation. Also, since there will be several Bollywood stars there, it looks like it'll be quite an experience."
The event 'Akon Venky's Bollywood Birthday Bash' will be a star-studded affair, attended by poultry mogul Bala Venky (of Venky's fame) and Bollywood star Suniel Shetty. The two, between them, will be inviting a number of their close friends, a list that comprises many Bollywood stars and industrialists. The performance, which will be held at The Westin, Koregaon Park, is expected to draw in a crowd of nearly 2000 people from Pune as well as Mumbai.
Tickets are priced at Rs 5000 for the VIP section, which includes food and drinks, while normal entry is priced at Rs 2500. Compared to the tickets at Delhi and Bengaluru, priced at Rs 1500, 3000 and 8000, the Pune show does seem like an attractive option for Mumbaikars.
Let Akon have his black towels
... and there’s a good chance that he will jump into the crowd and mingle with fans
Organisers are promising a host of special effects for the Akon show at Palace Grounds on April 17. But the best bit would be if Akon were to jump into the crowd and mingle with his fans. But that, according to a source, happens only when Akon is in a good mood.
Akon’s cheeriness could well hinge on his needs being taken care of. To begin with, there are the 100 black towels he’s asked for, as opposed to Bryan Adams’s demand for 100 white ones when he was in the city recently.
Organisers, however, are flummoxed by his request. “It is known that Akon loves the colour white and will be carrying only white custom-made designer clothes, but no one knows why he has ordered black towels,” says the source. All we can say is, just give him the black towels – Bangalore needs him to be in good humour.
The Senegalese-American singer, songwriter and producer will arrive earlier in the day from Delhi and stay in Crown Plaza, Whitefield.
The gates at the venue will be opened at 5.30 pm and the performances will start at 6.30 pm. According to sources, “Shiamak Davar’s troupe will be the opening act for Akon in Gurgaon near Delhi on April 16. However, it is not certain if they will perform in Bangalore too.”
For the local touch, the artiste had held a contest to select two unknown artistes to perform at his concerts. The winners were DJs Shirja and Aryan. DJ Shirja will kickstart the Bangalore show in Kannada.
According to our source, a few rare versions of instruments are being shipped in for the event. However, Vishal of Ivno Events, which is organising the show, said, “We cannot divulge details of the rare instruments.”
As for the other special effects, organisers are promising a ‘waterfall of fire’ across the stage and cannons firing coloured confetti at fans.
Akon to make his Hindi film debut
Akon's also plans to collaborate with Sunidhi Chauhan and celebrate his b'day party at SRK's place.
Post his Delhi and Bengalaru performances on the 16th and 17th, singer Akon, along with his wife, will be coming down to `aamchi' Mumbai and has got all his plans chalked out well in advance. Sources close to the singer say Akon will be considering doing many Bollywood tie-ups this year including celebrating his birthday to be hosted by Bollywood's King Khan Shah Rukh.
"He has been offered to act in a Hindi film after he made headlines with Shah Rukh Khan and ` Ra.One '. We cannot divulge more details at this point," informs the source. Speaking of collaborations, Akon has worked extensively with Aadesh Srivastava and is now considering working with Sunidhi Chauhan who recently met Akon's manager who was in Mumbai few weeks ago to discuss possible collaborations. 'Yes, if everything works out as planned there could be an announcement of them working together soon," says the source.
If the source is to be believed, Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan are planning to host the `Smack that' hitmaker's birthday party at Mannat and invite their B town buddies to the do.
